Droopy Breast: smoking

In reality, the problem of droopy breast tends to occur more often in the smoker than non-smoker. Any lady who smoke, their body elastin protein present mostly in the true skin layer, will break down faster than a non-smoker. The function of the elastin fibre gives the breast its support inside the suspensory ligament. Hence more the elastin fibre, better the support giving the breast a very youthful look, especially so amongst the non-smoker.


Droopy Breast: Pregnancy

It is noted that the more the number of pregnancy, the more droopy breast it becomes. The number of pregnancy is very strongly correlated with the degree of sagging. Therefore, more the pregnancy, more severe is the droop in general.

The ageing also affect the degree of droopiness. The more elderly they are, the more severe is the degree of drooping. When the lady ages, under the influence of gravity the breast droop and in doing so, it folds over the infra mammary fold or crease.

The Droopy Breast occurs in those sportswoman who do not support their breast adequately. When running, the breasts may move three dimensionally: vertically, horizontally in side-to-side and horizontally in front-to-back. This movement follows an overall figure-8 motion.

When there is an Unrestrained movement of the large breasts, it may contribute to sagging over time due to overtly stretching of supporting structure like the suspensory ligament.

The research study on the breast motion of an exercising woman show the following interesting surprise findings:


  • in any exercises, >50%  or more than half of total breast movement occurred in a Y-axis, vertical axis, that is along the head to toe direction,
  • some 20% of total breast movement is along x-axis, or side to side motion
  • 30% of total breast jerky movement is along the front to back axis, that is an in and out motion, as if punching the chest wall all the time

In the early research study during 2008, ten years ago, it was found that a sports bra called the encapusulation sports bra tends to be better than compression bra. The reason is that the encapsulation bra holds up breast inside its cup like a capsule instead of a bra that presses the chest firmly like a compression bandage around the chest. Both tends to restrict the breast motion during rigorous body movement that jerk the breast greatly.

It is interesting to find that the compression bras can only restrict breast movement in one plan, contrary to our general believe. Many of us think it can restrict for 3 planes movement. Whereas the encapsulation bras restrict jerky movement in 2 planes, that is one more than compression bras. However, non of them can stop movement in all 3 planes.

It is not hard to believe in the past that a smaller breast tend to have gained more benefits by wearing compression bra whereas a larger breast get more benefits from wearing encapsulation bras.

Droopy Breast: Impact of pregnancy on the breast

Droopy Breast is impacted heavily, dominantly and started from around the pregnancy. This is because during pregnancy, an extremely high amount of estrogen and progesterone are produced in hundreds of fold of increase. Droopy Breast: Middle-aged women and the breast ptosis

The problem of Droopy Breast invariably affect the middle-aged woman. Several factors are at ply in the middle-aged lady:

  • In those never enter the motherhood, the time factor will wear off the tissue that is supposed to maintain the breast in a form and lifted-up state.

When these factors are at play, the breast droops, or falls forward. When a woman with sagging breasts stands, the underside or inferior skin of the breast folds over the infra-mammary fold and lies against the chest wall. The nipple-areola complex, which is the entire tissue complex comprised of the nipple, areola, and its underlying ductal tissues, tends to move lower on the breast during standing position relative to the infra-mammary crease. In addition, the nipple of the breast may also tend to point downward.

The loss of estrogen reduces breast size and fullness causing it to collapse in volume.

Many women mistakenly attribute the collapsing changes of the breast and their sagging breasts to breastfeeding alone. Due to this wrong believe mothers are reluctant to nurse their infants thinking it will cause breast ptosis. Research study shows that breastfeeding is not the factor that many thought it was the cause of droopiness.
