Vagina is also called the birth canal through which a baby is delivered. Due to the size of the baby’s head which measured around 10 to 12 cm in diameter, the vagina outlet is invariably overstretched and torn. The more the pregnancy and delivery, the more lax is the outlet. Furthermore, the muscle lining the entire vagina canal along the whole length is over-stretched and obviously the tone is lost.
In order to restore the tone, vaginoplasty is done to tighten the canal along the whole length behind the vulva. The opening is also tightened through a small diamond shaped stripping and re-draping to close the gap to its original shape and size.
This is a moderate scale operation requiring spinal or general anesthesia. It is done as an in-patient procedure. The pelvic floor muscle and structures are tightened and strengthened with the redundant tissue removed or pliacated to shorten the muscle and other connective tissues. The introitus excess tissues is trimmed and skin apposed such that the opening is reduced in size. The recovery period is about 2 to 4 weeks. Then the patient can return back to normal sex life.
The operation is rather straight forward. The bleeding is minimal when dissected along the anatomical plane. The risk of infection is rare given that the procedure is done under a full aseptic environment. Pain is also minimal.
With the increasing awareness of women’s right and sexual liberation, more and more women are seeking the service of the doctor to get the tissue damage of the vagina restored to its rightful place and importance.
