Nose Bridge Narrowing

Nose Bridge Narrowing

Features of a narrow bridge:

  • The bridge is poorly defined
  • bridge is broad
  • no defined border limit on the side
  • the top end of bridge is ill defined
  • towards the tip, the bridge is also low and flat due to flat alar

Broad Bridge Narrowing: This is done by using dorsal implant to enhance the bridge. Any concurrent procedure is to surgically fracture (Osteotomies) the side of nasal bone , then pulling inward to narrow the bridge.

The various defects of the bridge that needs corrective surgery are:

  1. flat nasal bone — needs increased height of nasal bone by implant laying
  2. wide nasal bone merging into maxilla bone –needs osteotomies to surgically break the side of nasal bone and bring them close together
  3. bridge is wider than nasal tip — needs alar cartilage pulled higher and longer, and increased length with inserted cartilage for thickness. This is together done with bridge implant.

Surgical procedures

The principle is centered around creating higher and well defined bridge from the front and the side. The job is called the nose job or rhinoplasty.

The best choice material is still the patient’s own cartilages, usually harvested from the ear, or less commonly from the septum, or the rib cartilages, together with a implant sitting on the nasal bone.

The nose bridge narrowing may be done with nose columella lifting surgery, or the tip refinement surgery.

Post operation recovery

Post operation, the stitches may be taken off from 6-7 days. The visible enhancement of result is seen 1 week later. For best result, wait for a couple of weeks more.

If ear cartilage is grafted with skin, a scab may form in a nose for a month.
