Collagen has been used extensively in the past for the face lift procedures by our center’s doctors. The only drawback is that the thread dissolve quite fast, mostly by three months all the material have disappeared. Consequently the result do not last very long.
The other drawback is that some candidate have allergy to the collagen as many of these are make from the animal protein.
Today, we have progressed to use other material many of which are used for surgical suture material such as polydioxanone (PDO), polylactic acid (PLA), collagen, and polycaprolactone (PCL). Whereas the non-absorbable is the polypropylene where prolene is an example.
The mechanism of action of the collagen is similar to that of PDO. That is it releases the material from the coating on the surface of the thread into the tissue where it stimulate the collagen synthesis by the fibroblast. This later causes fibrosis, pulling and tightening and brings about the lifting effect.
